Below are frequently asked questions about your Valley Credit and Debit Chip Card.
What is a chip card?
A chip card is a credit or debit card with an embedded microchip. The chip provides enhanced security and protection against counterfeit fraud when used in a chip-enabled merchant terminal or ATM. Your new card with chip technology will continue to have the magnetic stripe to make transactions at merchant terminals and ATMs that are not yet chip-enabled.
What are the benefits of a chip card?
When transactions are made using the chip feature, the transaction is more secure due to a unique process that is used to authenticate the card. This makes the card more difficult to counterfeit or copy.
Why are chip cards more secure?
A chip transaction adds an extra layer of security to your card by requiring the chip to produce a single-use code to validate your transaction. It protects your card from unauthorized use and makes it extremely difficult to counterfeit when used at chip enabled terminals or ATMs.
What information is stored in the chip?
The chip contains information used to process your transactions at a chip enabled terminal or ATM. No personal information is stored in the chip.
How do I use my chip card to make transactions?
- When using your chip card at a chip-enabled terminal or ATM, insert the chip end of your card with the chip facing up.
- Follow the prompts on the terminal and wait for the transaction to be processed.
- You may be prompted for a signature or your Personal Identification Number (PIN) to complete your transaction.
- Keep the card in the terminal for the duration of the transaction.
- Remove the chip card when prompted or after the transaction is completed.
How do I use my chip card for online and phone transactions?
Use your card as you do today by providing the card information to complete the transaction.
How do I pay at a terminal that is not chip-enabled?
When making a transaction at a merchant or an ATM that does not have a chip-enabled terminal, your transaction will be processed using the magnetic stripe on your card to complete your transaction.
Where can I use my chip card globally?
Chip technology is the global standard and is already in use in over 80 countries, including Canada, Mexico and throughout South America, Europe and Asia – so your card will be easier to use outside the U.S.
Will my card number change?
Your card number and PIN stay the same unless your card has been replaced due to it being lost, stolen or compromised.
Has the expiration date or security code on my card changed?
Yes, the expiration date and security code has been changed. If you utilize your Valley card for recurring payments or automatic withdrawal programs (e.g., subscriptions, internet service, sports clubs, etc.) contact the program merchants with your new expiration date and/or three digit security code on the back of the card to ensure continued service.
Are there any additional costs for a chip card?
No, there are no additional costs to have or to use your new card.
